we met on the t.

no, that's not a lie we made up to cover for the fact that we really met on shaadi.com. it is a real life, genuine miracle of nature, one of those things scientists will someday explain with the random laws of quantum mechanics or something like that.

anyway, here's how it happened. i was on my way back to longwood, waiting for the E line at the park street station in Boston. as the train pulled up to the platform i saw through the windows the most beautiful girl i had ever seen (for real). i got on board, looked around for her, and noticed she had taken a seat next to some old woman. for the next 15 minutes, i convinced myself that she was sneaking glances at me, obviously stunned by my dashing good looks. despite this false confidence boost, though, i remained at heart a socially challenged enginerd who had basically never, in his entire life, spoken to a girl he didn't already know. after 3 stops of painstaking deliberation, i made a pact with myself: if the old woman got up before she did, i would strike up a conversation.

lo and behold, the old woman got off at northeastern, i sat down and asked shikha about her mike's pastries, she told me she liked slurpees and aqua teen, and the rest, as they say, is history...

I came to Boston to do an out of town rotation for medical school for the summer and was meeting an acquaintance for lunch. We talked about my future plans for residency, what our mutual UMKC friends were up to, but most importantly, how I was bored out of my mind with no friends to hang out with in Boston. We were eating lunch in the North End and stopped by Mike's Pastries, a famous Italian bakery for one of my favorite desserts, tiramisu. I took the tiramisu to go and hopped on the green line train to go back home.

I was sitting at a seat next to the window and I noticed a tall Indian guy standing to the right of me. I'm usually very subtle when I check people out, doing a quick up and down screen but I think this time, I was a little more obvious (oops). I was happy to discover that this guy was very attractive: tall, dark and handsome!

An older Asian woman was sitting next to me, and as soon as she left at her stop, the guy took the seat next to me. He had been "inconspicuously" glancing in my direction for the past 6 stops. I wanted to start a conversation but I couldn't think of anything to say. I'd never talked anyone randomly on the train; some might even find it a bit creepy. Fortunately, he started the conversation first with an opening line that was simple yet very effective. He asked, “So, what did you get from Mike's?” We started to talk about what I was doing in Boston, where I was from, etc. It was very easy to talk to him and I found myself wondering if this guy picked up girls on the T all the time! It was coincidental that he was a med student as well and we got off the train on the same T stop near the med school.

I really needed to hang out with people in Boston so I was hoping he would get my number at the end of the conversation. He told me that a few of his friends were going out that weekend and I can join him if I wanted. I thought, so ok, now he's finally going to ask for my number. But he just said, “Ok, see ya”. So I asked him if he wanted my number instead. Everyone thinks that Gaurav picked me up on the T, but the truth has finally come out!

So thank you Boston public transportation, for finding me a husband!
